I saw a similar 'crutch' (at least I thought) with the use of guns in Seasons 3 and 4: too often tension was broken, or the story conveniently moved on, with the appearance of a character with a firearm and a "Don't move or I'll kill you" warning.
I'm still trying to enjoy LOST as much as I can, but I must confess to being confused by this season, and am finding it a chore to watch rather than a pleasure, but I will stick with it. I do feel the producers and writers are upsetting the flow somewhat with convenient dramatic devices because the story still has many flaws and holes, or they've truly bitten off more than they can chew.
By the way, your insights here are TRULY welcomed -- I'm sure Bethany agrees!
the flashes are being used to revisit cracks and pockets in island mythology that need touching on. I'll address this in reference to Rousseau in the next write up, but you can get the sense that these flashes (while confusing) are going to answer many of the nagging questions.
hope these posts continue to be enjoyable ;)
